Regulatory Update for Data Centres in Australia
Australian Government has announced a national framework that will require large data centres to take greater responsibility for how they source, manage and consume energy. Proposed obligations include securing new electricity generation rather than relying solely on the existing grid, funding their own network connection upgrades, reducing demand during periods of grid stress, and demonstrating more sustainable energy and water management. Alongside these changes, many operators are also facing increasing expectations from investors, customers and regulators to measure, report and improve their operational energy performance through frameworks such as NABERS and mandatory climate-related disclosures.
